Race Walk Competition in Eugene
Eleven women and five men met the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field qualifying standards this weekend for the 20 kilometer race walk. Theresa Vaill won the women’s race by a little less than 2 minutes over her closest rival Joanne Dow. In the men’s race, Patrick Stroup was just 30 seconds ahead of John Nunn on the course which ran along Leo Harris Parkway near Autzen Stadium. Pre-race favorites Theron Kissinger, a top-3 finisher in past USA 50 km championships, and Dave McGovern, who in his 25-year race-walking career has won 13 national titles finished sixth and seventh respectively. The top five finishers in each race will compete for Team USA at the IAAF World Race Walking Cup, to be held May 10-22 in Cheboksary, Russia. Complete results are posted on the USATF website.
