Deena Kastor Wins The 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Women's Marathon. Magdalena Lewy Boulet and Blake Russell Also Make The Team
American record holder Deena Kastor had to pick up the pace quite a bit in the second half of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Women’s Marathon to catch up with Magdalena Lewy Boulet who had set a quick pace for the first 12 miles. Lewy Boulet hung on for second place while 2004 Olympic Trials fourth place finisher Blake Russell avenged herself by finishing in third place and made the team this year.
“I accomplished my two major goals coming in to this race. First, to make the team, that was the most important thing, and secondly to win” Kastor said at the post race press conference.
1984 Olympic Trials Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson finished 90th in 2:49:08, crossing the finish line in a Boston Red Sox cap. It was an American record for the women's 50-54 age group.
Full race results and further highlights are on the USA Track & Field website.
